Honoree Bio:
SSG Keith R. Bishop, 28, was a courageous and dedicated soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice on October 26, 2009, when the helicopter he was aboard crashed during a combat mission in the city of Darreh-Ye Bum, Afghanistan. Serving with Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Keith gave his life in service to his country while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. This marked his second deployment in the War on Terror, a testament to his unwavering commitment to protecting others.
Born and raised in Medford, N.Y., Keith brought his vibrant spirit and determination to everything he did. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in April 2003, beginning his journey as an Infantryman. His dedication led him to assignments with the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment at Camp Grieves, Korea, and the 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. In 2007, Keith set his sights on a new challenge: becoming a Special Forces Soldier. With relentless perseverance, he completed the Special Forces Qualification Course in October 2008, earning the distinguished Green Beret as a Special Forces weapons sergeant. Throughout his military career, Keith exemplified the highest standards of service.
But Keith was far more than his impressive military achievements. He was a man of infectious humor and quick wit, always ready to share a laugh and bring joy to those around him. His love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life. He adored his wife, Margaret, and held his parents, Robert and Suzan Bishop, and his siblings, Steve, Janeane, Janice, and his twin sister Kim, close to his heart.
Away from the battlefield, Keith found peace and joy in his hobbies. He had a passion for fishing, finding solace on the water with a fishing rod in hand. The thrill of snowboarding brought him exhilaration and adventure, and his commitment to fitness reflected his disciplined nature. These leisure moments highlighted the balance he maintained between the demands of his service and his love of life.
Keith’s legacy lives on in the memories of those who knew and loved him. His courage, loyalty, and humor left a profound mark on all who crossed his path. He faced each day with determination and kindness, embodying the values of a true hero. His family, friends, and fellow soldiers will forever carry his spirit in their hearts, honoring the life of a man who gave so much for the freedom of others.
